Roehampton On Air with the CSV Action Network

The Alton Estate in Roehampton, South London, had its own community radio station in August 2009, thanks to Melita Dennet, local Community Outreach Manager for the CSV Action Network.

Roe FM hit the airwaves from 12th-16th August, featuring a mix of local people's news, views and events. Listeners heard from local primary school pupils interviewing a children's author, older people remembering life on the estate fifty years ago, a women's boxing group, young people talking about their lives, and information about local facilities, learning and leisure.

Roe FM also broadcast live from the "Let the Music Speak" festival on Saturday 15th August, showcasing local musical talent.

Melita, who trained residents to use the equipment, produce and edit programmes and get the word out to the local community, told us: "I was impressed by the quality of the programmes created by local people, none of who had ever made any radio before. Hearing the range of voices, from pre-school children to senior citizens remembering the days of the horse and cart in Roehampton was fascinating."
