Mentoring in Schools - Meet Ben

Ben is a volunteer mentor with CSV RSVP’s Making Good Progress Project. He works one to one with students who are struggling with the maths curriculum.

Ben says:
“I found the children reacted well to me when I first went into volunteer at Edward Wilson School. They were excited at showing off their new Maths skills and had been well briefed about my role. They seemed enthusiastic and pleased to be working one-to-one.

If anything their enthusiasm has increased over time. Each of the 6 children I work with has different issues with Maths and enjoys the opportunity to have about 1/2 an hour to talk about their Maths progress and practice their methods.

With all the children, their confidence has grown but in different ways; either willingness to have a go at harder sums or confidence to use their preferred method and justify it. Their Maths language has really improved.

The kids are great and enthusiastic. They keep me on my toes and ask me questions about how children learn. We do have a laugh but also work to get things done. Its been fab from my point of view!”

Could you spare a couple of hours a week to help a child to realise his or her true potential?
