Mentoring in Schools - Marion Morgan

Marion is 81 – she is a volunteer organiser on CSV’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme. Not only does Marion get great satisfaction from helping local schoolchildren, it’s also opened new doors for her…

“I have been volunteering for CSV’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme on the Skills Swap project in Rhondda Cynon Taff for the past two years. I show children and young people how to do calligraphy in schools and community venues throughout the County. I’ve also recently become the regional volunteer organiser for Skills Swap. I was 81 on my last birthday and before I started volunteering I often had days when I felt bored and at a loose end; skill swapping has changed all that.

Youngsters these days often get a bad press but I can honestly say that I feel uplifted by how enthusiastic and responsive they can be, not only in learning new skills but also in relating to older people. The youngsters have also taught me so much in return, such as how to text on my mobile phone and how to get on the Net to send e-mails. I’m finding you are never too old to learn and it has given me the confidence to start learning Spanish again at the local college.

To anyone considering volunteering, I would say forget your age and get out there and have a go! You will get back every bit as much as you put in and it could make a very positive difference to your enjoyment of life and wellbeing.”
